Rycroft review ‘line in sand’ for UK politics, but government should go further to protect our democracy

In response to the publication of the Rycroft Review, Dr Susan Hawley, Executive Director of Spotlight on Corruption said:

“The publication of the Rycroft review should be a line in the sand for UK politics. It lays bare what’s long been obvious – our politics is too exposed to the huge risks of undue influence from wealthy donors and foreign interference.

The Rycroft recommendations are a hugely welcome step forward and we urge the government to implement them at pace.

But there are areas where the Rycroft review has not gone far enough, and we hope that Parliament will push the government to go further. For example, he recommends that donation caps only apply to people abroad – but there’s no good reason the cap shouldn’t also apply to people in the UK. This critical loophole must be closed.

There is widespread appetite for reducing the amount of money in election campaigns and action must be taken in the government’s Elections Bill.”
