Submission to the House of Lord Constitution Committee call for evidence, September 2026

25 September, 2026 | 0 minute read

In July 2026, the House of Lords Constitution Committee launched a call for evidence for its inquiry into the UK’s constitutional safeguards. It asked whether and how the UK’s democracy was under threat, how effective the UK’s constitutional safeguards are, and how threats can be mitigated.

The evidence we submitted warned that the UK’s constitutional democracy is at risk from the erosion of safeguards against executive overreach, corruption and abuse of power. We called for stronger independence, powers and resourcing for constitutional watchdogs, including the Electoral Commission and standards regulators, tougher enforcement of political finance rules, a comprehensive lobbying transparency register, and better protection of the public’s right to access information.
