The Nigerian and US governments are set to resolve a long-running dispute over US$182 million held in the UK. The funds are connected to the industrial-scale looting of Nigeria by General Sani Abacha and his associates during his 5-year military reign. The funds were laundered through an intricate web of Western bank accounts across the globe and subsequent efforts to recover the stolen Abacha loot have spanned decades, governments and continents. Those who assisted General Abacha include his son, Mohammed, and the current governor of Kebbi State, Abubakar Bagudu, who are parties to the UK proceedings.
